Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups
Objective: The research project aimed to delve into the prevailing conditions among the Madia and Kolam tribal groups, recognized as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG). The primary objective was to assess the extent to which their rights were being fulfilled, their awareness of constitutional values, their basic legal understanding, and their access to judicial institutions to seek justice for violations or non-fulfillment of their rights. The research involved immersing into the lived experiences of these communities to comprehend the challenges they face.
Furthermore, the research aimed to map the status of access to justice, examining factors such as affordability, geographical isolation, and language barriers that may hinder their access to justice. Beyond merely identifying challenges, the overarching goal was to explore potential interventions to address fundamental needs and ensure equitable access to justice for these communities.
Methodology: A mixed-methods approach was employed, encompassing both quantitative and qualitative methods. Focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with local community leaders were utilized to identify trends in needs and problems. These qualitative approaches helped uncover nuanced issues, particularly those shaped by cultural and demographic distinctiveness.
Data Collection: Structured interviews and surveys conducted manually in November 2021 formed the core of data collection. The research team visited various locations, including Mulchera, Chamorshi, Etapalli, and Bhamragad taluka in Gadchiroli, as well as Korpana, Rajura, and Jiwati taluka in Chandrapur. Complementing surveys, emphasis was placed on Focus Group Discussions and interviews with local community leaders working actively in the targeted areas. This multifaceted data collection approach aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.
